I, like most of my generation, just wanted a family, the white picket fence, and all that came with it. I got most of that (found out you have to paint fences), and more. I could have cared less about politics, although I read News Week (before it was a left wing rag) from cover to cover every week and stayed informed. My family had nightly dinner conversations about current events and the news of the day. That was the extent of my interest.
Then, I was asked to take over for the Chairman of The People for Ford campaign while she went on vacation. I had NO experience and had never worked on a campaign in any capacity. When she returned, I worked on the campaign for a local candidate running for the state and a local congressman. After the campaign, I was never asked to join the Republican Party or become a precinct committee person, nothing. That was fine, I had five children; and, at the time, I did not question that.
Fast forward thirty years. . .in 2004, the Republican Party called and asked for a donation and I expressed an interest in working for President Bush. I heard nothing. I called the local chairman of the Republican Party and volunteered. I was asked to run the phone bank for the party by the local chairman of Bush's campaign. They did not know if I knew what I was doing, they were just being pressured by the state. Now, there is a Central Committee, Women’s Club, and Men’s Club; and, they could not get anyone with experience in politics to run a phone bank in a very important election? I had no volunteers and I was by myself for a month every night.
The phone bank ended up playing a very important part in the 2004 election. We could only get a few volunteers to go door-to-door; so, I suggested a volunteer club from the many volunteers we ended up with at the phone bank. I was told I could not lunch with these people outside the party. I was never approached to join the party. They wanted me to go to the Women’s Club luncheons and Lincoln Day dinners for the price of a ticket.
I was selected to be a greeter for the President when he came to our community. I was also HIRED by the state Republican Party to run the phone bank for the 2006 election. My purpose of including this information is, why wouldn't you want someone who did not want an elected office, a position in the party, or a job (no pay off here) to organize volunteers for campaigns???? I believe the answer is: I questioned why there were no members of the Republican Party willing to do the work needed to elect a candidate and they did not like that. I also was not interested in joining their organizations, I just wanted to work in campaigns and elect conservative candidates.
The Democrats have the SEIU, AFL-CIO, ACORN and the Teachers’ Unions to work for their candidates. The republicans would rather have no volunteers than be challenged on their lack of commitment. This is why I became so disenchanted and wanted to start a separate organization of volunteers. I believe I am in tune with most other people in that we trusted the Republican Party to protect us from the present situation. And, because of their lack of appreciation for people outside their click who are willing to help (I am far from the only one); they never have volunteers to help elect conservative candidates. The following could not been achieved within the Republican Party, you have to get permission from the POWERS that be to do anything.
Thanks to the TEA PARTY movement, CIC now has a fantastic organization with great people who are dedicated workers. We have had two successful Tea Parties, to date. We organized a project called Pack It In that provided much needed supplies for the troops overseas. We were able to fill and send 102 boxes to the troops, as well as the necessary postage to send them. There was a lot of community involvement outside of our organization that supported our efforts. And, we hopefully have an ultra conservative from our town to run in the 2010 election.
I enjoy the work and most of all the people I have met and had the pleasure of working with. I believe most people are good and caring citizens that just want to live their lives in peace and do what is best for their families. Sadly, we now have all learned that our government is not to be trusted and is on a course that will cause much harm to our country and, therefore, our families.
So, here we all are spending hours on the Internet sending information to each other, enduring long bus rides to D.C., attending meeting after meeting, organizing groups, and working to restore our great country.
I think this is a historical time in all our lives and I am blessed to be able to be a part of it. I sincerely believe we are doing GOD'S work and I so hope we are successful.
